Charles Levy, MD

Charles E. Levy, MD is the System Chief of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service, North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System, and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation in the College of Medicine, University of Florida.

Dr. Levy received a bachelor of arts from Case Western Reserve University and a medical doctorate from The Ohio State University. He received his specialty training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago where he was recognized for research productivity as the winner of the Sarah Baskin Award for two consecutive years. He was the Director of the Prosthetics and Orthotics Service, the Director of the Seating and Positioning Service, and the Director of Stroke and Orthopedic Rehabilitation at The Ohio State University from 1993-1999 prior to accepting his current position. He has been the recipient of the Performing Arts Medical Association's Young Investigator Award, the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Medicine's Golseth Young Investigator Honorable Mention Award, The Association of Academic Physiatrist 's Excellence in Research Writing Award, Honorable Mention, and the AAP's Young Academician Award. Dr. Levy was amongst the first recipients of the NIH K12 Rehabilitation Medicine Scientist Development Program Award.

Dr. Levy has long been interested in the internet as a medium around which communities of those with disabilities and health care practitioners can be built. In 1998, Dr. Levy broadcast a conference over the internet targeted to a community of individuals with the rare disease fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva using live streaming video. This conference was viewed in the US, Europe and Isreal. Further, viewers interacted with presenters over telephone lines in real time.

Dr. Levy is a board member of several patient and professional advocacy groups including the Transverse Myelitis Association, and Fore Hope Golf. He is active in the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation as an Associate Editor, Stroke Case of the Month, as the Chair Prosthetics, Orthotics, Wheelchairs, and Human Biomechanics Special Interest Group, and as a Study Guide Subcommittee Faculty Member for Limb Deficiency Rehabilitation. Dr. Levy has also served as a rehabilitation consultant for the television show "ER". He is the author of numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters.
