Ability Prosthetics & Orthotics, headquartered in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, has launched a separate patient care division, Symmetry. Symmetry will specialize in custom post-mastectomy solutions.

Custom breast prostheses will be fabricated by first taking a non-invasive 3D scan of the patient’s chest wall and torso. A separate scan is taken of the patient’s sound side—if applicable—to determine the correct size. The scan is then sent via e-mail to a manufacturer where a positive chest model is carved by machine and then forwarded to another company where artisans fabricate the custom prosthesis. The resulting prosthesis adheres to the wearer’s body without need of a special bra.

Wendy Carter, CFM, LPN, at Ability Prosthetics & Orthotics says the process is much more comfortable and precise than making a plaster cast of the chest wall.

According to Ability, Symmetry patient care centers are located throughout the Mid-Atlantic.
