The Center for the Intrepid (CFI) at Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas, was recently the site of a four-day seminar and skills-training program on injury rehabilitation, called the 2008 Military Advanced Athletic Skills Training (MAAST). The event was sponsored through a grant from Ossur, Reykjavik, Iceland, and was hosted by the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) and Operation Rebound.
According to CAF, the July 21-24 event "provided Veterans Administration representatives, physicians, and prosthetists from around the nation and Canada an opportunity to observe and take part in recreational therapies being done by troops rehabilitating their injuries at the CFI." Prominent CAF spokespersons and other physically challenged athletes headlined the event, mentoring and coaching 15 participating troops in sports including basketball, running, handcycling, cycling, and golf. Brian Frasure, David Leeka, Paul Martin, Mike McNaughton, Carlos Moleda, Evan Morgan, and Sarah Reinertsen were among the headliners.
Operation Rebound Program Manager Nico Marcolongo stated in press release, "MAAST is another way that we provide outreach to troops.... We are delighted to be a part of this first-class event, which is making a real difference in the lives of our troops."
