October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Many
O&P facility staffs include caring, knowledgeable certified
mastectomy fitters (CMFs), many of whom are themselves breast
cancer survivors. They fit clients with forms and prostheses, often
along with bras, swimsuits, and even turbans and wigs. But they
frequently perform an even more valuable service: post-mastectomy
education, along with a caring attitude and a listening ear, which
helps their clients cross that "Bridge Back to a Healthy World," as
the article by Bebe Tamberg, CMF, describes it.
Physical therapists are valuable allies to O&P practitioners
and essential members of the rehab team. But are they also
competitors? This issue presents views from
orthotists/prosthetists; upcoming issues will include the
perspectives of physical therapists and practitioners who are
educated in both fields.
"Shop Talk" discusses "One-Shot Socket Lamination with a Shuttle
Lock." A PowerPoint presentation demonstrating this technique is
available online.
