TSA To Retrain Airport ScreenersTo help insure safe and comfortable travel for persons with limb
loss, the ACA has been working closely with the Transportation
Security Administration (TSA) to establish new screening guidelines
and standards that protect and respect the rights of amputees.
The TSA released two training videos
to major airports nationwide in December 2004. The first video will
teach airport screeners the basics of prosthetics as well as
provide instruction on the new guidelines and standards for
screening amputees. The second video is an overview highlighting
the standard operating procedures for screening people with
disabilities in general. The TSA is releasing these videos to
ensure that equal treatment is shown to all travelers, regardless
of disability.
The dissemination of these training tools should accelerate the
overall improvement of the screening process, according to the ACA.
Training is ongoing and will continue throughout the holidays and
into the new year.
