A charity basketball game between the AmpuTeam
Spartans and the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Department
of Providence Hospital & Medical Center, Southfield, Michigan,
raised $1,046 for the department's Special Equipment Fund. The fund
provides rehab equipment for patients without health insurance or
the ability to pay.
The AmpuTeam Spartans is a team made up exclusively of amputee
patients of Wright & Filippis Inc., headquartered in Rochester
Hills, Michigan. The Spartan's team goal is to raise money for
local rehab departments while showcasing the benefits of Wright
& Filippis' AmpuTeam Prosthetics Program. The AmpuTeam Program
emphasizes functional outcomes with a collaborative effort between
patients, family members, physical therapists, physicians, and
Wright & Filippis' staff.

"In addition to providing prostheses, we are
stressing the importance of continued functional training," said
Ken Woodward, CPO, director of prosthetics for Wright &
Filippis. "Because of the limited rehabilitation that amputees
receive in today's healthcare arena, we are attempting to fill that
gap by offering our patients every opportunity to learn the skills
necessary to achieve their own individual goals. We do this by
incorporating the AmpuTeam philosophy and by hosting monthly
Training for Life clinics in three locations throughout
Michigan.
The game between the AmpuTeam Spartans and Team Providence is
just the beginning. "The first game has generated significant
interest from other hospital systems who wish to participate in
future basketball games," added Brad Shebib, MPT, Wright &
Filippis' prosthetic gait specialist.
