ACA Working to Advance Prosthetic Parity
By Morgan Sheets As many legislative sessions wrap up business for
the year, The Amputee Coalition of America's (ACA) Action Plan for
People with Limb Loss(APPLL) has some great progress to celebrate.
Bills were introduced throughout the country, and we had hearings
on prosthetic parity in more than a half dozen states. A great
foundation has been set for the 2007 legislative year and we are
already getting prepared.
ACA leaders John Vacca and Rose Bissonette recently brought
together a training session in Region A, the New England states. In
addition to training new peer visitors, ACA staff gave several
presentations on the parity initiative. We already are seeing a
great deal of momentum out of this event and we are excited to use
this as a pilot in other regions.
The ACA is working with various groups, including the American
Disabilities Coalition, to organize a series of strategy meetings
in New York and Pennsylvania. These gatherings are an important
step forward in our work for parity legislation. We also are
meeting with lobbyists from Florida and Texas to coordinate our
efforts for the upcoming year.
In the coming months, we are launching our brand new online
Action Center, sending out our new and improved Activist Organizing
Kit, and bringing on an additional staff person to work on the
campaign. We are thrilled to move full speed ahead with the support
of our allies.
