What's New?
By Tina Eichner What lies behind us and what lies
before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.—Ralph
Waldo Emerson
It is human nature, and a matter of survival, to constantly be
assessing what is behind us in an effort to prepare for what is
ahead. The common denominator between the future of O&P and its
past is that it is a discipline filled with people driven to help
others. That's quite a solid foundation.
The need to grow the pool of future practitioners is often
discussed, and indeed current and potential students are the future
of this industry. The American Academy of Orthotists and
Prosthetists (the Academy) has taken great strides to raise
awareness of the O&P profession among students. The state of
O&P recruitment is the topic of the Grant update in the current
edition of the Academy Today.
Academy President Gary M. Berke, MS, CP, FAAOP, notes in the
Academy Today, "It's so important to introduce students
to our profession. For most, O&P is a new experience and a
profession that they had never considered, mainly because they were
unaware of the opportunity."
"It's a win-win all around. We have the opportunity to expose
high-achieving students to the profession and potentially spark
their interest in pursuing a career in O&P," adds Michael
Brncick, MEd, CPO, administrative director at Northwestern.
The EDGE Welcomes New Writer
In the interest of better capturing this segment of our audience
and at the suggestion of Editorial Advisory Board Member Kevin
Carroll, MS, CP, FAAOP, we are expanding our content a bit to give
a voice to future practitioners. Kevin has introduced us to Chelan
Pedrow, a graduate student in the MSPO Program at the School of
Applied Physiology at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta,
Georgia. This month we introduce you to Chelan in the Perspective
column. This articulate and thoughtful young woman will
be sharing her experiences from the student perspective through
articles in The O&P EDGE throughout her two-year program,
internship, certification, and as she begins her professional
career. Chelan, welcome and good luck.
MedCastRadio.com Debuts August 2
At the Amputee Coalition of America's annual meeting in
Minneapolis in June we met three gentlemen from Arizona who are
launching a new venture this month called MedCastRadio.com. They
are launching a weekly webcast radio program geared toward the
amputee community. Their goal is to build an interactive online
global community and Internet radio support group worldwide,
providing common amputee information and addressing problems and
concerns about living as an amputee. "Our aim is to be a global
online family' empowering amputees with communication and
information," said Randy West, CP, one of the partners. Adam O.
(Ochla), an entrepreneur and prosthetics inventor, and David Banks,
an AK amputee, round out the team.
Tune in to MedCastRadio.com at 6 PM EDT on August 2 to check it
out and visit the website for information about future
broadcasts.
