You Asked, We Listened

By Karen Henry

I don't know about you, but the first three months of any given year are hair on fire for all of us at The O&P EDGE. During the first quarter of the year, we generally have our largest concentration of trade shows and educational conferences. For that reason, it's also my favorite time of year, as it gives me a number of opportunities to talk with readers face-to-face and find out what we're doing well and what we can improve upon.

The majority of our readers give us glowing reviews, and I am happy to hear that we are serving the needs of the profession in a meaningful way. There's always room for improvement, however, and a number of you have pointed out that we need more orthotic coverage in the magazine.

We heard your requests, and we have taken them to heart. This issue—our annual "Innovations" issue—focuses largely on orthoses. There's a lot of excitement around functional electrical stimulation (FES) devices, and Miki Fairley provides an excellent overview of the technology behind these devices as well as information about real-world applications. For those who are curious about stance control orthoses, Judith Philipps Otto brings us all up-to-date on the latest developments in that arena . On the prosthetic side, this issue provides coverage of elevated vacuum suspension as well as some interesting applications of prosthetic devices for recreational use .

We'll feature more orthotic coverage in future issues (prosthetics, pedorthics, and business development too), so stay tuned.

In addition to talking with current readers of The O&P EDGE at the various industry and professional conferences, I'm also privileged to introduce new readers to the magazine. I did a little digging and discovered that on average, The O&P EDGE receives 15 new subscriptions each week. That means that between now and the time you sit down to read this issue, The O&P EDGE will have at least 60 new subscribers. Given the size of the dedicated orthotic, prosthetic, and pedorthic profession, all I can think to say is, "Wow!"

For those of you who are reading your first issue of The O&P EDGE, welcome. For those of you who are loyal readers of the magazine, thank you for your continued readership.

Be sure to stop by our booth (#323) at the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists Annual Meeting and Scientific Symposium in Orlando and let us know what we can do to meet your clinical and professional needs in issues to come.
