CMS Sets Accreditation DeadlineThe Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced
in a December 19 conference call that September 30, 2009, is the
deadline by which all existing providers of Durable Medical
Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics, and Supplies (DMEPOS) must
submit approved accreditation to one of the ten endorsed
organizations. The entire orthotics, prosthetics, and pedorthics
industry, including post-mastectomy providers, must meet
accreditation requirements by that date. If not, the National
Supplier Clearinghouse (NSC) will revoke billing privileges.
The "Special Open Door Forum" conference call was recorded and
is available for replay until Friday, December 21, by calling
800.642.1687 and referencing identification number 27829970.
CMS also noted that a grace period for new providers entering
the Medicare program will be announced via Medlearn Matters and via
e-mail. All Medicare DMEPOS claims must include the National
Provider Identifier (NPI) after March 1, 2008.
