Maryland Health Insurance Bill Shelved

Lawmakers in Maryland shelved a bill that would, in part, require "specified insurers, nonprofit health service plans, and health maintenance organizations to provide specified coverage and payment for prosthetic devices," essentially covering the cost of prosthetic devices.

In a letter dated March 3, 2008, to Peter A. Hammen, chairman of the House Health and Government Operations Committee, Montgomery County Delegate Heather R. Mizeur said she withdrew House Bill (HB) 69 "in deference to established committee policy requiring the Maryland Healthcare Commission to study health insurance mandates for their effects on employers, individuals, and insurers in our state. I look forward to their report on the cost impact of appropriate, medically necessary prosthetic coverage, and I anticipate that the benefits that amputees gain from prosthetic devices will far outweigh the minimal premium increases on ratepayers."

Mizeur added that she will reintroduce the legislation in 2009.
