Media Zeroes In on Pistorius Over the last year, bilateral amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius'
battle for the 2008 Beijing Olympics has been widely covered by the
media. On April 15, Good Morning America, ESPN, and
Nightline all will examine the scientific, ethical, and
philosophical questions surrounding the international ban that
currently prevents Pistorius from competing in sanctioned
able-bodied events. Based on tests performed by German professor
Gert-Peter Brueggemann, the IAAF ruled in January 2008 that
Pistorius is ineligible to run in the Beijing Olympics--or any
other sanctioned able-bodied competitions--because Pistorius'
prosthetic Cheetah Flex Feet running legs provide him with a
"technical advantage."
Looking for insights into this game-changing issue, ESPN's
investigative journalists have interviewed Pistorius, his family,
coach, prosthetist, friends, competitors, lawyers, and Ossur, Aliso
Viejo, California, manufacturer of the Cheetah Flex Foot. They also
interviewed Bruggemann.
Good Morning America will air a segment between 7-9
a.m. EST; ESPN's "E:60" will broadcast an 8- to 10-minute feature
between 7-8 p.m.; and Nightline will look at the story at
11:30 p.m.
In addition, ESPN Magazine's April 21st cover story
will delve into Pistorius' case.
