Tube, Trot, and Trike Triathlon ComingIf you're an athlete, or even an armchair warrior, near Boise,
Idaho, it's time to sign up for the Challenged Athletes Foundation
(CAF) benefit, the Tube, Trot & Trike Triathlon. The fun
fundraiser, held on Saturday, August 2, has limited entries,
offered on a first-registered, first-entered basis. Race-day
entries will be accepted before the event if space is available.
The entry fee is $30.
Organizers call the event "a triathlon...well, sort of." They
describe the course as beginning "on the Boise River with a
two-mile inner-tube float to the first transition, where
participants are required to trot (at a pace of his or her liking)
a very short distance to a not-so-challenging trike course. The
third leg requires teams of three to complete one lap each of the
trike course in relay fashion." Participants must provide their own
flotation devices and tricycles, but individuals who register
without teams can be paired up with other solos on race day.
Participants must be at least 18 years old. Prizes will be awarded
for the winning trike team, best decorated trike, and the most
money raised. Tricycles can be donated to Tube, Trot & Trike at
the end of the event.
The event raises funds to provide disabled athletes with grants
for training expenses, equipment, or travel. Its creator, Matt
Perkins, was a CAF grant recipient when he was on the U.S. Disabled
Ski Team. After retiring from competitive skiing, he turned to
triathlons and created the event to give back to CAF. Rehab Systems
Inc., Boise, is the title sponsor and will cover all the expenses
of the event, so that all money raised from participants and other
sponsors will directly benefit CAF.
