Southern Illinois University
Orthotic and Prosthetic Services

In 1982 Orthotic and Prosthetic Services was established at S.I.U.. School of Medicine in the Division of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation in the Department of Surgery. Orthotic/Prosthetic Services was established at the University to provide a neutral setting between the hospitals in Springfield and to provide the independence for the provision of care for referring physicians within the Springfield and the Central Illinois area. It also allowed us to have the opportunity to have substantial support during the initial period of the beginning of the practice because of the tremendous financial outlay that will occur to provide quality orthotic/prosthetic care.

At the present time Orthotic/Prosthetic Services provide a full spectrum of orthotic, prosthetic and other rehabilitation needs. Not only are we involved with the classic rehabilitation of amputees, persons with polio, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, et cetera, but we are also involved with the needs of the ocular patient who has to have a replacement eye prosthesis.

The current staff includes two Certified Prosthetist/Orthotist, a Certified Orthotist, orthotic and prosthetic residents, registered technical staff, and the clerical/support staff to provide the quality of care which is necessary for today's patient. The facility is located within the Memorial Medical Center complex in the S.I.U. Clinics Building. Substantial examination rooms, casting rooms, alignment rooms are available for independent evaluation of the patients in a private atmosphere. The large laboratory facilities are onsite for the optimum provision of care to both the outpatient and inpatient populations.

Quality improvement is one of the major goals of this section. The appropriate needs of the patient are constantly monitored to insure that the optimum benefit to cost ratio is reached. There is continual communication between the patients and the staff as well as the referring physician and therapy departments.

S.I.U. Orthotic/Prosthetic Services is fully accredited by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics, Inc. All patient care is provided by ABC certified practitioners or NCOPE accredited Orthotic/ Prosthetic Residents under the direct supervision of the certified practitioners. The majority of the technical staff are registered by the American Board for Certification as well. The standards of orthotic and prosthetic care established by DVA, CARF, and JCAHO are also exceeded.
