Leipzig

One of the joys of international travel is the opportunity to see new places and learn about other cultures and customs. This was my first visit to Leipzig, so I took time the final evening to walk around the center city and sample the local cuisine. Luckily, I was escorted by a good friend who knows this city very well, so I could understand many more of the nuances of the culture than I would as a typical tourist.

Leipzig is one of the most historic cities in Germany. It is the birthplace of Richard Wagner and the city where Martin Luther preached. Johann Sebastian Bach spent the last 28 years of his life here, and served as the choirmaster at Thomaskirche. Goethe reportedly spent many evenings at Auerbachs Keller, which was founded in 1525 and is still a popular spot to enjoy good food and drink with friends and family.

Leipzig has been a popular city for conferences over the centuries, but its infrastructure declined during the years it was part of East Germany. Over the past ten years, much of the city has been updated and many of the public buildings are ultramodern. But, you can still see many traces of the old decay in the back alleys and side streets.

One historic site we visited was the old Nikolai Church [Nikolaikirche] where Leipzig citizens first assembled publicly to advocate "one people, one country" during the era when East Germany was still controlled by the communist party. Much like Rosa Parks' refusal to move to the back of the bus in the southern USA, this small act of defiance sparked such a response in the population that it ultimately led to the reunification of Germany.

The Leipzig people are said to be free spirited and open minded, with a healthy dose of skepticism towards authority. [Those sound like good traits to me!] We enjoyed a very relaxing evening meandering around the streets while enjoying the State fair and jazz festival, which was underway all week. As the night ended, we polished off our final beer and bratwursts while the crowd rocked to the refrain from "Sweet Home Chicago". If my experiences are any indication, Leipzig is a great city to visit and it is certainly one I will return to eagerly.

Interior views of the Nikolai Church, which was the site of a series of lectures, sermons, and musical performances open to the public due to the State Fair celebration, held at the same time as the Orthopadie + Reha-Teknik World Congress.
