As I've noted before, one of the greatest opportunities at any major meeting is the chance to spot innovative products, materials, and ideas and to learn more about how they might be applied to benefit our patients. The SOIF meeting was no exception in this regard.

Otto Bock Scandinavia was showing a very lightweight and sleek carbon fiber AFO with abbreviated trimlines under the trade name "Walk On". This ultrathin composite AFO is prefabricated in a series of left and right adult sizes, providing moderate resistance to plantarflexion and dorsiflexion as well as some coronal plane control. The wafer thin footplate connects to the calf band via a small carbon fiber spring that flows around the medial malleolus and up the posterior calf region, making it far less conspicuous than the ToeOff orthosis from CAMP. The Bock design also eliminates any risk of pressure over the tibial crest or dorsum of the foot.

Ultralight, wafer thin carbon composite AFO is available in Scandinavia.

This is a spin-off of the custom fabricated "Malmo" technique that has been popular in Scandinavia for many years. Based on long term experience with literally thousands of custom made carbon fiber AFOs, this particular configuration has been developed to address the stability needs of many patients. In most cases, trimming the footplate so it fits snugly within a Blucher style shoe is the major modification required, but custom molded foot, ankle, or tibial shells can be easily attached when more control is necessary. I was told that several hundred have been used in Sweden with generally good functional results and durability.

Re: I want to find a Journal about UTX orthoses
To the best of my knowledge, any refereed articles on the UTX will be in Dutch. I don't have access to that literature. You may be able to contact Ambroise Holland for more information. --John Michael CPO

Re: Microprocessor leg
There's no short answer to such a question. As of December 2002, there are basically three MP controlled prosthetic knees commercially available in North America. The Blatchford IP+ is a pneumatic swing phase control knee; the Blatchford ... read more

Re: false leg 1967
The external appearance of prostheses did not change much until the 1960s. Prior to that time, almost all artificial limbs were made primarily from wood. Due to the hard out structure, this type is termed "exoskeletal" construction. Most... read more
