Ratchet Pull-In Shuttle Lock
|
Pulling the Perlon loop near the lateral brim gently draws the pin deeper into the shuttle lock. A conventional release button disengages the lock for doffing.
|
One of the slickest concepts I have seen in a long time was on display at the Ossur Scandinavia booth. They have developed a prototype shuttle lock combining the convenience of a shuttle lock with the donning advantages of a lanyard suspension.
The smooth pin slides easily into the lock during donning, and is securely suspended automatically. The amputee then pulls a Perlon cable loop at the lateral socket brim three or four times, and gradually pulls the pin deeper into the lock until all the tissue is well seating within the socket. This should enhance donning for many transfemoral amputees.
Thanks to a built-in ratchet mechanism, each pull of about 1 centimeter brings the residual limb slightly deeper into the socket. When the cable is released, it automatically retracts and the next 1 centimeter pull brings the residuum deeper still. This is much more convenient that a conventional pull sock that requires 10 centimeters or pulling to bring the limb 10 centimeters deeper into the prosthesis.
The lock is released by pressing a small button, so doffing is no more complicated than with any other shuttle lock. I hope this prototype proves feasible for commercialization, as this would be a very useful option for many patients.

Re: I want to find a Journal about UTX orthoses
To the best of my knowledge, any refereed articles on the UTX will be in Dutch. I don't have access to that literature. You may be able to contact Ambroise Holland for more information.

Microprocessor leg
Hi, I am trying to do a project on microprocessor legs. Can you please let me know which knees are the best out in the market? I will like to compare them and try to understand how they work.

Re: Microprocessor leg
There's no short answer to such a question. As of December 2002, there are basically three MP controlled prosthetic knees commercially available in North America. The Blatchford IP+ is a pneumatic swing phase control knee; the Blatchford ... read more

The external appearance of prostheses did not change much until the 1960s. Prior to that time, almost all artificial limbs were made primarily from wood. Due to the hard out structure, this type is termed "exoskeletal" construction. Most... read more
