Atlas of Limb Prosthetics To Be Republished and Revised!
One of the most common requests I receive from rehabilitation colleagues is to help them obtain a copy of the Atlas of Limb Prosthetics. Unfortunately, the publisher of that text has been bought and sold several times in recent years due to the consolidation of the US medical textbook industry. One result of all that commotion is that they have allowed the Atlas to be out of print for several years and also been unable to underwrite a new edition. Basically, they have just hunkered down to weather the storms that have left only two major US medical textbook conglomerates standing at this point, rather than the numerous small companies that previously formed the backbone of the industry. [And you thought we had troubles in the US P&O industry!]
Thankfully, Dr. John Hsu and supporters such as Doug Smith from the Prosthetic Research Study in Seattle have persuaded the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons to purchase the rights from Mosby and this has just been completed this month. The AAOS has announced plans to republish the Second Edition as a hardcover text, and work is already underway to put together a Third Edition in time for the ISPO meeting in Hong Kong in 2004.
Frankly, we are lucky to have the AAOS as the publishers for this book. They have an excellent track record of publishing specialized texts that are related to orthopaedic interests, and their support staff is superb. They do need to estimate the number of texts that will sell so they can print the most economical quantity of the current edition.
The projected cost for the reprinted Second Edition will be $160 USD. If you would like to purchase a copy or copies of the current edition, please email your interest directly to Laurie Braun at: braun@aaos.org. Once it is back in print, it will also be available from Amazon.com on the Web for those who find this a convenient way to order. A PDF file of the contributors and the table of contents can be downloaded below:
The Second Edition of the Atlas of Limb Prosthetics will soon be back in print, and a new edition is scheduled for publication in 2004. Table of contents and list of contributors is available for download as a PDF file. The Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to open this file, and can be downloaded for free from www.adobe.com.
