Responses to the Terrorist Attack on the USA

Like the rest of the globe, I have been glued to the news and struggling to deal with the flood of emotions following the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, DC. This tragedy has brought out the best in many people, both in the USA and around the world.

A large number of friends and colleagues from Latin America have sent spontaneous messages of support and condolences. Many have faced similar tragedies in their homelands, and know from first-hand experience that the right words at the right time can be surprisingly effective in helping people in their struggle to cope with such devastation.

One of the first to respond were the members of the Mexican P&O Association [SMOPAC], always among the first to volunteer to help whenever there is a crisis. You may recall that a number of US practitioners worked with them side-by-side in the aftermath of the Mexico City earthquake some years ago, and they stand ready now to assist us in any way.

Alberto E. Castillo Moreno, OP is a past President of SMOPAC, and sent the following PowerPoint presentation, titled "Calidad Humana" or "Human Qualities". My Spanish language skills are not very good, but a rough translation of his email message is: "To All P and O Colleagues of the World: At this moment of world-wide uncertainty, we send some thoughts to try to increase our humanity." Although the text of the slides is in Spanish, I don't think you need to understand the words to appreciate the sentiments. Click here if you'd like to view these images.

On September 15th, the Argentinean P&O Association sent a proclamation celebrating Mexican Independence Day, and voicing their support for the USA as we face the aftermath of this tragedy.
