Update on Hip Disarticulation Fitting with C-Leg
Back in July, we posted some video clips from a collaborative fitting of a young man with a recent traumatic hip disarticulation amputation with a C-Leg system. The conclusion of that article noted that his HMO had denied coverage.
Mickey's physician wrote an excellent letter of support for the appeal expressing his confidence that the C-Leg offered this patient an "incredible result". He also invited the insurer to send a peer reviewer [who was also a physician Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation] to attend their amputee clinic, to observe Mickey walking with and without the C-Leg system to make an independent determination on this technology.
The HMO decided to save the expense of hiring a Board Certified PM&R reviewer and instead opted to cover the prescribed prosthesis in full.
