More About Upper Limb Prostheses and Bikes

Thanks to David Gerecke, CPO for suggesting a visit to www.prostheticarm.com/index.html, a web site featuring a specialized set of components being used successfully by a physiatrist with a transhumeral amputation who continues to do some pretty intense mountain biking. The site has the appropriate disclaimers noting that Dr. Craig is an expert rider and that the depicted activities carry significant risk!

Dr. William Craig is a physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation who is an avid mountain biker. He uses a specialized upper limb prosthesis to help control the bike during such difficult maneuvers.

This approach is particularly interesting because it uses a commercially available shock absorber between forearm and humeral segment to dampen some of the impacts of riding.

The shock mounted between forearm and humeral segment is designed to absorb some of the impacts of mountain biking.

For additional information on converting motorcycles to allow people with various disabilities to continue riding, www.ama-cycle.org/roadride/DISBresourcelistings.asp is a good site.
