Southside Aces Cut New Traditional New Orleans Jazz CD

One of 2005's Corners mentioned a Minnesota-based sextet, called the Southside Aces, who play traditional New Orleans jazz music. The drummer, who is the youngest member of the band, is our son. Parental pride notwithstanding, this is a hardworking band of solid musicians and their sound has steadily matured over the past couple of years. Their first CD is currently sold out but their sophomore effort, titled "Bucktown Bounce", was just released in September and is now available online from CD Baby. You can also listen to full MP3s of all the tracks for free.

The Aces sound is deliberately "old fashioned" and historically correct, not a modern-day interpretation, and the vintage instruments add to the authenticity. As noted in the liner notes from their latest disk, "It is refreshing to discover the band's interest in pieces that are not the usual so-called 'Dixieland' fare". Check out their take on Hoagy Carmichael's "Stardust" or the rousing "Four or Five Times" that has become one of their signature pieces.
