Industry-Wide Evaluation of Prosthetic Socket Strength Maria Gerschutz,
PhD, CPO

Prosthetic sockets are the fundamental connection between an amputee's
residual limb and his prosthesis. However, prosthetic sockets are not
subjected to standard test evaluations like most other prosthetic
components. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the static
strength and variability of diagnostic sockets, copolymer sockets, and
definitive laminated sockets as they are currently produced in the
industry.

Maria J. Gerschutz, PhD, CPO, attained her doctorate in engineering from
Wright State University (Dayton, OH) focusing in biomedical engineering.
As an applied research engineer at WillowWood, she is responsible for
testing and evaluating current and new products with an emphasis on
patient outcomes.

Gerschutz coordinates WillowWood's supported academic and resident
research projects. She has published several journal articles and has
presented research outcomes at numerous national conferences. Gerschutz
is a two-time recipient of the Thranhardt Award for her work on elevated
vacuum suspension and evaluation of prosthetic socket strength.
