VIRGINIA RECOVERY AUDIT CONTRACTOR (RAC) AWARDED!


Effective September 1, 2012, the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) procured Health Management Systems, Inc. (HMS) as its contractor to perform all audits pursuant to the Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) federal mandate.

Section 1902(a)(42) of the Social Security Act and Section 6411(a) of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) authorized the expansion of the RAC program to Medicaid. The RAC program's mission is to review paid Medicaid claims in an effort to reduce Medicaid and CHIP improper payments through the efficient detection of overpayments and the identification of underpayments.

A website specifically for the Virginia RAC is currently under development. This site will provide more details and information about the RAC once it is operational.
