Accelerated Payments from Medicare
Posted By: Wil on September 14, 2012
Hello Colleagues and Guests, I have received a reply from the Department of Health & Human Services. Our written response to the many issues involved will take a considerable amount of time, but we thought it was appropriate to share one piece of information with you. Quote from CMS: "In cases when this is creating a financial hardship, the supplier may request accelerated payments. The requirements for requesting an advance payment can be found in the Internet Only Manual (IOM) Pub. 100-6, Chapter 3, Section 150. An accelerated payment may be issued where there is: (Special character dot) A delay in payment by the fiscal intermediary for covered services rendered to beneficiaries and this delay has caused financial difficulties for the provider, (Special character dot) In highly exceptional situations where a provider has incurred a temporary delay in its bill processing beyond the provider's normal billing cycle, or (Special character dot) In highly exceptional situations where the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services deems an accelerated payment is appropriate. A link to the actual document can be found at the oandpsolutions.org website, under Links and then Under CMS, then under Medicare Financial Management Manual - Chapter 3. We're not sure about all that is involved with these accelerated payments, so you will have to read and act accordingly. It is interesting to note that two CMS letters were written and received by us without dates. As such, you may want to date the receipt of your letters received so you can go back and get an approximate date that a document was written by Medicare, or other federal agencies. Some use dates in their letters, some do not. Hope this helps. Wil Haines, CPO MaxCare Bionics Avon, IN 46123 |
