More information about PECOS updates
CMS posts the PECOS information in a PDF file on their website. This file is currently being updated several times per week even though the page does not indicate that the file has changed. We are monitoring the file and whenever it changes, we process the new file, which takes about one business day, and then update the data in the search and the dates shown in the paragraph at the top of the search page. The CMS file date that is shown there is based on the created date that is available in the meta data for the CMS PDF file. Often that date is several days earlier than when the file was actually posted. Although we have no way to know for sure, our assumption is that the created date most accurately reflects how up to date that file was. Note that CMS appears to be both adding and dropping providers with each update, so the fact that a provider shows as being enrolled at one point is not a guarantee that they will not be dropped from a future enrollment list.
If you would like to see if CMS has posted a new PDF file since our last update, you can visit the CMS website to download the lastest PDF file, then open it and choose File > Properties in your PDF reader to see the created date on the file. If that date is newer than the date posted on our PECOS search page, then the file could contain updated information that is not available in our search. In that case, you can expect that our search will be updated with that new information within about one business day.
We are unable to provide any further information about whether a physician is enrolled or not beyond what you see in the search results. If you believe a physician is enrolled and they are not showing up in the results, we suggest that you wait until the file is next updated and then try again.
Disclaimer: The data for the oandp.com PECOS Search is taken directly from files posted by CMS and updated according to the procedure described above. Although we will make every effort to update the search quickly when new files are posted by CMS, we can make no guarantee as to how fast this will happen due to the time required to process each file. Further, we are not responsible for inaccuracies in the data provided by CMS or for errors in the conversation or search process that could lead to inaccurate results.
