Ibarra, Ecuador/January 2009

50 amputees were evaluated and 9 amputees were fitted recently in Ibarra, Ecuador by our pilot program with lead prosthetist, Bob Frank, CPO, Trumansburg, NY. This was Bob's third trip to Ecuador in 11 months. Bob contacted the Barr Foundation last October in hopes that we could supply him with needed components for his trip in January.

The ongoing clinic in Ibarra was started in 2008 by Club Rotario de Ibarra and Bob, and is staffed by Ecuadorian prosthetist, Ivan Victoria and Luis Gutierez a prosthetic technician. The Rotary Club in Concord, California donated the prosthetic and orthotic equipment for the facility. The clinic provides prostheses free of charge and is open 5 days a week, 50 weeks a year. Since the opening of the clinic 70 amputees have been fitted and the goal is to provide prosthesis for 100 amputees this year.

Bob will be returning in May with 2 CPOs who will be volunteering their time to begin orthotic patient care. He is also hoping to get other practitioners involved in the future.

Bulldog Tools, Inc. was very generous in donating missing components to the Barr Foundation for the trip in May. The company is family owned and operated and located in Lewisburg, Ohio.
