Founded in 1967 by disabled Vietnam veterans, Disabled Sports USA is the nation's largest multi-sport, multi-disability organization. A national, nonprofit, tax exempt, educational organization, DS/USA provides sports and recreation services to children and adults with physical disabilities. DS/USA serves more than 60,000 people annually, through a nationwide network of 80 community-based chapters in more than 30 states.
MISSION
To ensure individuals with disabilities have the opportunity to participate in sports,
recreation and physical education programs, from preschool through college to
elite sport levels.
U.S. OLYMPIC COMMITTEE / COMPETITION PROGRAMS
As a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee, DS/USA works with National
Governing Bodies of the USOC (such as U.S. Skiing, USA Volleyball, U.S. Track
and Field, U.S. Swimming, U.S. Cycling and U.S. Powerlifting) to expand
opportunities for disabled athletes.
Under authority of the U.S. Olympic Committee, DS/USA sanctions and conducts
winter and summer competitions and training programs for athletes with physical
disabilities.
AFFILIATIONS / HONORS
DISABILITIES SERVED
DS/USA serves anyone with a permanent physical impairment which hinders
mobility. This includes those with amputations and other orthopedic impairments,
spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, head injury, multiple sclerosis, muscular
dystrophy, spina bifida, stroke and visual impairments.
CHAPTER NETWORK
DS/USA has more than 80 community-based chapters offering year round
programs in more than 30 states.
PROGRAMS / SERVICES
DS/USA offers a national fitness training workshop series for fitness and
healthcare professionals; winter skiing instruction, instructor training, and
competitions; summer competitions and training camps in athletics, swimming,
volleyball, cycling, powerlifting, and lawnbowls; information for parents on
securing physical education for disabled children; and chapter support services.
DS/USA chapters offer a variety of programs, including snow skiing, water skiing,
sailing, rafting, cycling, hiking, camping, fitness exercise, golf, bowling and other
active sports.
