HISTORY

Since 1948, Muilenburg Prosthetics and Orthotics (MPO) has been serving patients in Greater Houston and beyond. When founder Al Muilenburg first hung his shingle, the company was known as the Muilenburg Artificial Limb Company. Al and his wife, Loretta, an occupational therapist, lived in the back of the house on Hathaway Street while the business was run out of the front. Fabrication took place in the adjacent garage and sockets were dried in the kitchen oven. Back then, artificial limbs were largely made up of wood and leather but veterans from World War II and Korea sparked a growth in technology and the Muilenburg team grew with it.    >> Click HERE for more.

EXPERTISE

While founder Al Muilenburg – a firm believer in the importance of a thorough education – had held certification number “16,” thousands of practitioners in the country are now ABC-Certified, including every practitioner at Muilenburg Prosthetics and Orthotics.

To become certified, each member of our team successfully completed the Practitioner Certification Examination of the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics (ABC). To be eligible for the examination, our practitioners are required to complete an accredited orthotics or prosthetics program, and have a minimum of one year of experience working under another ABC-certified practitioner.

By attending and presenting continuing education programs, our practitioners continuously advance their skills. Recent courses covered such topics as microprocessor-controlled knees, myoelectric devices, energy storing components, and the latest in lightweight orthoses.

Since the beginning of MPO, we evolved with the profession, staying current with complex technology, improved materials, and refinements in fabrication techniques that constitute today’s varied selection of orthotic and prosthetic devices.

ON-GOING CARE

Our care continues long after a patient is fit with a device. Many of our patients are with us for life and will return as their needs change or as technology changes to better fit their needs. Our on-going care also includes the production of videos and handbooks to help our patients adjust to their new circumstances, and the sporting events in which we take part, including golf clinics, running clinics, and wheelchair tournaments.

As the field continues to evolve, we will continue to evolve with it so that we may continue to help prosthetic and orthotic patients live their lives to the fullest.
